What if the virus warning your employee is staring at right now is not from Windows, and clicking it hands a scammer access to their computer?
Most people assume browser alerts are system alerts. They are not always.
And by the time someone realises the difference, the damage may already be done.
Fake browser notification scams exploit the legitimate browser notification feature to deliver ongoing fake security warnings, prize alerts, and IT support messages to a user's screen.
When a user visits a scam website, a prompt appears asking them to click Allow. This is a standard browser notification request — the same type that legitimate sites use for updates and alerts.
The difference is what happens after the user clicks Allow on a scam site. The site gains permission to send browser notifications indefinitely. Those notifications appear in the corner of the screen and are designed to look like Windows system alerts or antivirus warnings. They may claim a virus has been detected, display a fake support number to call, or direct the user to a malicious website.
Because they appear outside the browser window, many people assume they are genuine operating system messages.
Browser notification permissions do not expire automatically.
Once granted, a scam website can keep sending notifications to that browser until someone manually removes the permission. An employee who clicked Allow weeks ago may still be receiving fake warnings today without connecting the two events.
The risk is that an employee who acts on one of these fake warnings by calling the number displayed or clicking a link can expose login credentials or install malware.
The notification looks like it is coming from Windows because it appears in the same location as genuine system alerts.
Most employees have no reason to question it. And the longer the fake warnings continue without being removed, the more likely someone will eventually act on one.
