What if the action your team takes to stop a scam email is the exact thing that makes the attacks worse?
It sounds counterintuitive. But with scam emails, clicking unsubscribe is one of the most counterproductive things a recipient can do.
Understanding why changes how your whole team handles suspicious email, and that habit change can prevent a significant amount of follow-on risk.
An unsubscribe link scam exploits the standard unsubscribe mechanism found at the bottom of marketing emails to either confirm that an email address is active, direct the recipient to a malicious website, or present a fake login page designed to steal credentials.
In a legitimate marketing email from a company the recipient knows and signed up with, the unsubscribe link works as intended.
In a scam email, it serves a different purpose entirely.
When someone clicks unsubscribe in a scam email, they are telling the sender that the email address exists, is actively monitored, and belongs to a real person who reads and acts on emails. That information is valuable to an attacker. In some cases, the link leads directly to a malicious website or a fake sign-in page.
Most employees have been taught that clicking unsubscribe is the responsible thing to do when they receive unwanted email.
That instinct is correct for legitimate marketing emails. It becomes a liability when applied to scam emails, where the same action serves the attacker's goals rather than the recipient's.
The real problem is not the unsubscribe button.
The real problem is that employees apply the same response to every unwanted email, regardless of whether the sender is legitimate. One habit applied in the wrong context hands an attacker a confirmed, active email address and sometimes a password.
