Empowering Girls with Digital Awareness: Outsmarting Scams, Creeps, and AI Tricks

On August 16, Aurora InfoTech joined Empowered Girls Inc. at their Back-to-School Program—a purpose-driven event designed to prepare young women for success in the classroom and beyond. Held at the Dr. James R. Smith Center in Orlando, the program brought together inspiring speakers, engaging activities, and meaningful conversations focused on equipping students with the tools, insights, and confidence to thrive in today’s digital age.

Our CSO, Roy Richardson, was honored to present “Outsmarting Online Creeps, Scams & AI Tricks.” The interactive session helped students understand the risks of the online world and how to stay one step ahead of cyber threats.

Why Digital Awareness Is Essential

The internet offers endless opportunities for learning, connection, and creativity—but it also comes with real risks. Scammers, impersonators, and AI-powered tricks are evolving fast, often targeting younger users who may be more vulnerable. The session encouraged students to look at the online world with both excitement and caution, balancing digital opportunities with practical safety skills.

Helping Students See the Online World Clearly

The presentation guided students through a practical set of lessons:

• Common Online Threats – Students learned how to spot the red flags, from fake profiles and phishing scams to strangers who overshare attention.
• AI-Powered Deception – Real-world examples showed how AI can create fake voices, messages, and even deepfake videos designed to fool people.
• Protecting Personal Info – Students discovered why keeping personal details private, limiting what they share, and using privacy settings are key to staying safe.
• Spot the Scam Game – A hands-on activity helped students separate real messages from scams, sparking group discussion and laughter while reinforcing critical thinking.
• What to Do if Targeted – Practical tips emphasized blocking, reporting, and talking to trusted adults instead of trying to handle threats alone.
• Being a Digital Defender – Encouragement to support peers, share safety tips, and stand up against harmful online behaviors.
